Casino Poker:
For Players Who Want to WIN!

Our Gaming Editor – and Author – “Vegas Vic” – Victor H Royer – has written a new book: “Casino Poker.”

With the World Series of Poker just recently completed here in Las Vegas, maybe next year is your turn! And with this book, you will certainly have a better chance than most.

We asked Vic about this book, and here’s what he had to say:

“Cash is King – and with this book, you too can haul in the Cash, and laugh all the way to the Bank!

In Poker – and Texas Hold ’em especially – knowing how and when to play some of the best hands is a key requirement. Because – while they may be statistically the “best” hands – they don’t always win. And that’s because Poker is much more than just cards! It’s People!

A battle of wits, of knowledge, of experience, skills, observation, and just plain old Chutzpa!

But there’s a lot more to this game than just this. Especially for Texas Hold ’em.

While the game looks simple – and is relatively easy to learn – it’s apparent simplicity belies a true complexity of decisions and outcomes. And just knowing the Odds is not enough.

Math alone will not help you to Win. It’s a useful tool, of course, but Odds, Implied Odds, Pot Odds, and so on, are just a part of the overall arsenal that a good and successful poker player must have.

In the end – Poker is a game of people – and that means that a “hunch”, or an “observation”, or a “tell” are just as important – if not more so – than knowing the math behind the game and all it’s Odds.

In this book, you’ll find the tools and skills you need to make you a Winner! And that’s great for any game! And for your bankroll!” The printed version of this book can be found at this link:

Ten years ago my children and I went on a Vegas trip together. The highlight of that trip for us was our plans to go see Celine Dion perform at the Colosseum. Being Canadians, we are all huge fans of Celine, and we were very excited to see her live. We made it all the way to the Colosseum steps before we were stopped by the theater staff and informed that she was ill and there would be no performance.

Newkirk’s Notes

Hello From Las Vegas – Sharp eyes will notice something missing, and that is the exclamation point at the end of my salutation. I’ve been doing this since 1999, and always have a hard time yapping about everything amazing in Las Vegas in the wake of a huge disaster. I’m sure we have quite a few members in the affected area of Harvey, and you’d have to be a media hermit to not understand the swath of devastation.

Our of respect for them, and a heavy heart for their area, I’m suspending the column this week. I know that many of you view Las Vegas is an escape from the bad in the world, and we do have all of our other regular features.

I’ll be back next week with talk of how gambling revenues are going where (and where you should or should not be gambling), what the sale of the Fontainbleau means to you, even better cell coverage and safety measures on The Strip, plus my pending article examining all 12 months of the year in Las Vegas, and why you may (or may not) want to visit us during a particular month.

Newkirk’s Notes

Hello From Las Vegas! – Well, longtime Las Vegas resident Jerry Lewis passed away. That night, the skies above Las Vegas cried, and the next day, the sun went out. Or so it seems. First of all, we do mourn the loss of the comedy legend who was so closely tied to Las Vegas. Not only as a resident, but as a headliner. I had the pleasure of seeing him perform at The Orleans perhaps some 15 years ago, and the show was great. He was a consummate entertainer.

He’d play South Point occasionally up until a couple of years ago. However, time and health were catching up to him and natural causes finally put him to rest.

The eclipse turned out to be a complete bust here. I’m hoping that many of you had better fortune viewing it elsewhere. My friends in my native Portland, Oregon area were giddy. For many of them who were born and raised there (and of a certain age), this was their second full or 99% eclipse in their lifetime. We lived through the one in 1979 that affected the Pacific Northwest before moving on into Canada.

Clouds had been forecast, and arrived right on schedule. I was sitting on my covered back patio about 1 AM. (I keep late hours, nothing happens in Las Vegas in the morning, and I’m probably working long after may of you have retired for the evening). The sky was aglow. If you’ve ever been here during the rare times we’re overcast, you know what I’m talking about. Especially along The Strip, each hotel’s lighting colors painting the sky above them. Then 2 AM brought the rain. It is truly spectacular.

2 AM brought the rain, which had cleared by morning. However, the combination of us being so far away from the center of the eclipse and an almost completely cloudy sky simply made the eclipse feel like a really dark and cloudy day as dusk nears. Ironically, the kind of day that Portland experiences many months of the year. Talk about reversal of fortune! While there were a couple eclipse events in the tourist areas, fortunately we hadn’t marketed ourselves as a place to view it.

For those wondering what the odds of clouds or rain actually were: We are tied with Phoenix (behind Yuma and Redding) for the most amount of sun each year. Reno is in the top 10 as well. (Take that, “Sunshine State” Florida). However, July and August are our “monsoon” season with moisture working its way up from the Gulf Of California (which is directly to the south of us a couple hundred miles, and we’ll get stretches of days which are cloudy with thunderstorms and flash flooding.

In the next week or two, I’ll be detailing the pros and cons of visiting each and every month of the year here, in respect from everything to when it is busy (or not) and what the weather and activities have in store. So, stay tuned. A couple of odds and ends before I say adios until next time:

Taxi Authority Cracking Down – The Taxicab Authority, the official body that governs and sanctions taxis and limos, has puffed up their chest, wagged their finger, and told the cab companies and drivers that if they really, really, really don’t get serious about stopping the long hauling (where the cab driver takes you a longer way, running up the fare), there will be penalties to pay! Um… this has been 20 years in the making. Reminds me of a song from the 80’s:

For those of you who are still using cabs, we absolutely encourage you to take the minute to download the Uber app, enter your data and a couple of credit card numbers, and use it in town. You’ll get a quote on the ride up-front and save over using cabs. Use our code UberAV and your frist ride (up to $20) is on us and Uber!

Dueling Steak and Lobster Specials – For those of you who do venture off The Strip, two locals casinos are featuring a special that used to be more commonplace here in Las Vegas. Before Caesars Entertainment foolishly demolished Bourbon Street, they had a $7.99 steak and lobster, which I’d enjoy on a regular basis. It was a great (and free) place to park, had good video poker, and cheap drinks just 5 minutes from The Strip. Heaven forbid, that isn’t allowed in near The Strip anymore!!!

But I digress…

– Promenade Cafe at the Rampart is served daily from 11AM to 9 PM. The cost is an incredible $9.99, with soup or salad bumping that up by a couple of bucks.

– Chuckwagon Cafe at The Longhorn will run you $12.99, available 24/7. We could not find salad on their menu!

Which to consider and why? The Rampart is the casino for the JW Marriott, which (as you can summarize), is on the upscale side. If the weather is cooperative, you can also take the 3/4 mile walk down the road and check out locals favorite The Suncoast. While farther from The Strip, this is a chance to enjoy one of the nicer areas of Las Vegas.

The Longhorn is definitely more on the “working class” side of things. Nothing wrong with the place, but don’t expect anything super-fancy. The Eastside Cannery is across the street, and Sam’s Town is a couple of blocks the road. For those of you who gamble at The Cal, Fremont, or Main Street Station downtown, Sam’s Town is a Boyd property where your play will add to those points (as will Boyd-owned Cannery). Also, for those on the frugal side, Sam’s Town has a free shuttle from both The Strip and Fremont Street.

Notes: Always call ahead as specials are subject to change. Also, keep in mind that the section of Boulder Highway with the casinos along it can be a little sketchy after dark. I wouldn’t worry so much about it if you are a group of guys. It is well lit, and there is an RV park on one side of the road, and a huge Walmart shopping center on the other. But, I’m not sure if I’d encourage wandering around that area for you ladies. You might be mistaken as a lady who is not exactly in that area to shop or gamble.

Hope you are enjoying this issue!

Newkirk’s Notes

Hello From Las Vegas! – The weather is a broken record for the next couple of weeks. A little over 100F for a high, 80F for a low. Fortunately, in a few weeks we’ll be out of the 100’s for the year. And, we’ll revert back to feeling like what a normal “summer” for many of you feels like!

Fontainebleau To Finally Be Finished? – That hulking blue monster on the North Strip is back in the rumor mill again. Me? I wish they would have torn it down. It is too tall, and looks out of place. However, with a reported $650 million asking price, only a billion more needed to totally finish it, and a close location to the $1.4 billion convention center expansion, someone is going to raise the capital and finish it up.

The latest rumor came to light via MGM Resorts CEO Jim Murren. However, not as them as the buyers. Which is interesting, because if anyone has the ability to finish it, and the customer database to fill it, they do.

This Just In – On the heals of our discussion last week on all of the new construction, added hotel towers, remodeling and more, Station Casinos has announced that in addition to the already-in-progress upgrades at Palace Station, they are dumping another $76 million into the property. They clearly want it to join the ranks of the flagship Red Rock Resort, Green Valley Ranch and the recently acquired Palms.

The backlash of the super-high resort fees, paid parking, paid everything, outrageously priced food and drink and the like is already bubbling to the surface. June visitation showed negative numbers. Station Casinos is going all-in to provide a couple of Strip-quality resorts just a couple of minutes off The Strip.

When you count in lower resort fees, lower food and drink prices, lower room rates, lower gaming limits and looser games/slots, they are banking on the though that you won’t mind staying there and taking their free shuttles or a cheap Uber to hop over to The Strip and back. And, providing an atmosphere that you won’t feel you need to leave as much. We’ll keep you posted!

Golden Knights Tickets Selling Very Well – The NHL Las Vegas Golden Knights are among the top tickets selling in the league. This doesn’t come as a huge surprise. Hockey fans were expected to plan trips around seeing their team play The Knights here in Las Vegas. We have after-market tickets (regular and premium seats) to Nights games on our Access Vegas Official Tickets Site

I’ve heard quite a few Vegas-loving hockey fans say that the Knights will be their second-favorite team, and we know that merchandise is selling unbelievably well.

We’re Getting A Soccer Team As Well – The city has approved a 15 year lease to the United Soccar League, a developmental minor league organization. The lease is for Cashman Field, which sits about a mile north of the Fremont Street Experience. Cashman was on the list of finalists as a site for the Raider’s stadium and while the existing infrastructure, parking, and freeway access were awesome, the “not close to Strip” location eventually killed that inititive.

77,166 – That is the number of airline seats expected to be available DAILY into McCarran Las Vegas airport. We also know that for some of your, airfare is the main complaint on budgeting your trip here. I’m not so sure we’re going to see lower prices anytime soon, despite the fact that oil prices are currently very reasonable.

However, I will go out on a limb with this prediction: If the economy and Las Vegas visitation stays strong, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see the launch of a Las Vegas based carrier. Not along the lines of Allegiant, whose business model is to serve undeserved, smaller metropolitan area airports. But a full-fledged airline which serves the major cities in the US which send visitors to Las Vegas.

The name had to be eye-catching. It had to be glamorous. It had to be exotic. Billy Wilkerson, founder of the Hollywood Reporter and gambling addict, knew his audience. So he picked the Flamingo, naming his improbable postwar venture after a gaudy bird that doesn’t spend time in the Nevada desert.

The North Rim of the Grand Canyon offers a quieter, more relaxed way to appreciate this natural treasure than the more often visited South Rim. This side of the Grand Canyon is higher (1,000 feet) and receives more rain and snow than the South Rim. Meadows, pine trees, and aspen dot the rocky terrain, softening the perspective, and the experience. The North Rim is located over 8,000 feet above sea level, on the Kaibab Plateau. It also contains the park’s highest elevation, Point Imperial, at 8,803 feet.

Newkirk’s Notes

Hello From Las Vegas! – As I type this, my thoughts to out to our friends in the Pacific Northwest and Western Canada who are experiencing Las Vegas like temperatures (which they aren’t used to). The last time they got hit like this with the heat, I was a high school sophomore in Beaverton, Oregon! Here in The Vegas, our days are getting just a tad shorter, and August is completely behaving itself. High’s of 104F and lows around 80F as far as the eye can see.

Construction, Construction, and more Construction – Do you remember the days when Las Vegas would look a bit different on each trip, with always something new to do and see? Things are heating up on the resort construction front now that Las Vegas is in a boom again. Anyone can tell you what it is happening. We’ll not only tell you what, but what it means to you, the visitor.

Resorts World, on the former Stardust property, is finally picking up the pace. It appeared they were waiting for final confirmation on the $1.4 billion convention center expansion. Which is essentially taking place right across the street from their site.

Besides the thousands of new rooms, the great news is that this is going to be a fully themed resort. They are an Asian company, and will bring a significant Asian theme to their development. People have been lamenting the lack of themes in new resorts, and the de-theming of currently-themed resorts (we’re looking specifically at you, MGM Resorts). This is a welcome change.

Besides giving you an excuse/reason to visit the north Strip, what does this mean for you? We have seen virtually no growth in the number of rooms here, even as visitor counts rise. Which is behind rising hotel room rates. Because of their location, Resorts World will have to be price-sensitive except during times really big conventions (or a significant number of smaller conventions) are in town. I predict that their room prices will be a decent deal when you consider the quality of the property. They aren’t building a Motel 6.

The Las Vegas Club (as well as the entire block it sits on, including Mermaids, the infamous home of the deep-fried twinkie), is being town down. Owner Derek Stevens (The D, Golden Gate) is building a new resort from the ground-up. No word on how tall this will be, nor how many rooms, but I expect something pretty amazing.

It is widely expected that The D, Golden Gate, and this new property (which will NOT be called Las Vegas Club), will share a players card program. In a similar fashion to how The Fremont, The Cal (newly remodeled, take a peek next visit) and Main Street Station all use the same Boyd Gaming card you can use at any Boyd-run property.

However, don’t hold your breath on big comps. Over the past couple of years, our friends at Vice Lounge Online have split their play between The D and Main Street Station. The D sends them food discounts and match-play coupons. Main Street Station sends them hotel room comps. Something to think about if you are not sure where to take your play downtown. Granted, Main Street Station doesn’t have go-go dancers and sexy-outfit dealers. Some don’t mind paying for the eye-candy.

Binion’s still has an entire hotel tower collecting dust. I’ve seen the rooms, and except for the fact that they are very dated, it looks like they could almost open back up tomorrow. I have no inside intel on this, but my hunch says that if visitorship stays this solid, and as downtown numbers grow (both in terms of total number of visitors and gambling revenue), they are going to have to look at refurbishing and opening the rooms. Getting a loan to do that, in this Vegas economic climate, would be a walk in the park

Palms and Palace (Station), now both owned by Station Casinos, are getting massive influxes of cash. Palms is getting new or redone restaurants and the entire casino floor is slated for remodel. Palace is not only getting a second hotel tower, but a continued casino overhaul and expansion. Both are counting on drive-in customers (still a significant part of our visitation) with their free parking, lower resort fees, 5 minutes to The Strip locations, free strip shuttles, off-strip gaming odds, and local’s priced food offerings. Oh, and an Uber ride to The Strip is cheaper than paying for Strip parking in most cases.

Even if you are not an off-Strip person (even if it is just 5 minutes), more rooms mean more competition. If Palace can siphon off a hotel tower (albeit a smaller-than-Strip tower) of people from The Strip, pricing gets more competitive.

The caveat? Around the time when all this will be opening, so will the HUGE convention center expansion, supposedly drawing even more people to town. I’m going to play a wait-and-see on that one. Chicago and Orlando are the other two HUGE convention cities. If I’m planning a convention and every city has nice facilities and paid parking and obnoxiously high resort fees, both Chicago and Orlando are MUCH closer to a significant part of the US (and Canadian) population. If all of this new room inventory comes online, and the Convention Authority fails to fill all that new convention space (one can hope, I prefer you guys over people here for business), room prices should stay in check as we move into the 2020’s.

Now, if we could do something about those pesky airline monopolies, which are keeping airfare up even though oil is comparatively cheap right now.

Hope you are enjoying this issue!
