Great Casino Slots – Volume 4

Our gaming Editor – “Vegas Vic” – Victor H Royer – has written another new book: “Great Casino Slots – Volume 4”. This is the latest edition of his popular series on Slots – which are the best, what they do, how they play, and how you can learn to play them best.

We asked Vic about the book, and here’s what he had to say:

“Get Ready for Big Wins! From China – Macao – to Las Vegas, Atlantic City, California, New York, and the American Midwest – and to Singapore, to Australia, to Europe, and just about everywhere – modern 21st Century Casinos are a place where great new games are being introduced almost on a daily basis.

There are so many new games now available, that it’s even harder to figure out which are the better ones, and why. And how to play them, because many of these new games can be quite complicated – at least at first.

In Volume 4 of this series: Great Casino Slots, the choices are easy. Just look, see, read, and learn.

Simple! – And all without it costing you any casino playing money while you find out!

Great Casino Slots – Volume 4 – is packed with the latest, newest, best and hottest casino games.

And now you have them all right here – at your fingertips – ready to make you a Winner!”

This book is available as both a printed paperback, and as an eBook. Here are the links:

Newkirk’s Notes

Hello From Las Vegas! – The summer heat is definitely in the rear-view mirror, and we’re experiencing the flawless “summertime” weather which blesses us in the spring and fall months. (We put up with three months of intense heat each year in exchange for getting “summer” twice a year). Pools are still open, and shorts are still being worn. With overnight lows around 60F, you won’t need a jacket at least for the next couple of weeks!

Cromwell Returns Good Gaming Odds To Center Strip – It appears Caesars Entertainment is doing an experiment to see if good table game odds will attract more players and do well for them. As I’ve been reporting on, downtown has seen great gains in gaming revenue despite offering better rules, looser slots, and lower minimums while The Strip has seen stagnant numbers amid their horrible rules (for the player) and high limits.

MGM Resorts has really been leading this “screw the player” trend on The Strip, just as they were industry leaders in obnoxiously high resort fees and paid parking. Perhaps Caesars took a look at what is happening with downtown gaming revenue and said “Let’s test it at Cromwell and see how it goes. Among their current offerings:

– Single “0” Roulette – Also known as European roulette and previously found primarily in high-limit areas only, The Cromwell now has this table game on the main casino floor and with approachable table limits. This rule seriously increases your odds.

– EZ Baccarat – Played the same way as traditional baccarat, EZ Baccarat is among the most popular baccarat games worldwide. While the drawing rules are unchanged, EZ Baccarat eliminates the taking of the 5% commission after every winning Bank hand. You can finally give Baccarat a try without fear!

– 3-2 Shoe and Double-Deck Blackjack – With affordable table limits among the lowest minimum bets on the Strip, this is where you should be playing for now..

– 100X Odds on Craps – For those who like to roll the bones, The Cromwell now offers a super-generous 100X odd on craps with accessible table limits. The more odds you place, the less of a house edge the casino has on you.

While we suggest playing downtown for the best gambling conditions day-in and day-out, we STRONGLY encourage you to play at The Cromwell if your play keeps you on The Strip. You’ll not only get better odds, but you’ll be sending a message that you’ll patronize a property that is gambler-friendly.

Las Vegas Golden Knights – Our expansion NHL franchise is in pre-season, and their very first home game at the T-Mobile arena was Tuesday night. I wasn’t in attendance, but friends who were really enjoyed it and were raving about it. I’d like to tell you that I at least watched it on TV. However, I have Cox Cable (not for long as CenturyLink just strung my old neighborhood with fiber optic and I’m eager to jump), and Cox has not come to an agreement to carry the sports network which televises the team.

We hear that Knights merchandise is selling like crazy, and many regular visitors who enjoy hockey are claiming the team as their “second favorite” (next to their home team). If you were thinking about planning a trip here to watch our team play your team, or you are simply thinking catching a Knights game while you are in town, you won’t be disappointed.

Yes, You Can Bet On It – Yes, you will be able to bet on Knights games before you go watch them. Betting has been allowed on UNLV since 2001, and betting will be allowed on The Raiders when they show up in three years. Some wonder if this isn’t an invitation to fixing of the games. The reality is that the sports books are some of the best protection against fixing of sports games. They know when something is JDLR (a casino term for Just Doesn’t Look Right). IE, when a betting line is getting an abnormal and unexpected amount bet on one side.

Remember, they are simply in the business to make sure an equal amount of money gets bet on each side. If you lose a sports bet, the casino essentially gives your money to someone who bet the other side, and takes that commission in doing so. (This is why you have to bet $11 to win back $10. The casino pockets that extra dollar). If a game has issues and isn’t fair, they get killed. Over the decades, when sports fixing has happened around the country, it has been the Las Vegas sports books alerting the FBI and helping with the investigations!

Might As Well Jump – This story made international news, so forgive me if you’ve heard it. A 28 year-old Welsh visitor who had too much to drink decided to go swimming. Unfortunately, his choice of venue was none other than Lake Mead at Hoover Dam. He started on the Arizona side, and ended up on the Nevada side, where he was promptly arrested.

Because of those huge water intakes sucking vast quantities of water into the dam to be run through huge turbines (which many of you have seen if you’ve taken the dam tour), authorities not only didn’t go in after him, but noted that there would have been nothing they could do if he got in any kind of trouble like starting to drown. It is that dangerous.

In the spirit of What Happens In Vegas, Stays In Vegas he was ticketed to the tune of $330 for “jumping, diving or swimming from a dam, spillway or other structure.” We absolutely recommend a visit to Hoover Dam (except during summer when they are 10 degrees hotter than here in town). Do it up big and do the longer deluxe tour that takes you inside the dam, and to the base of it. You won’t regret it. Photos or seeing it from the air don’t do it any justice. We have some great tours at AccessVegas.com/Tours. Just stay out of the water!

Members Mania – A few readers have asked why we haven’t been running Members Mania for the past couple of months. Members Mania is where we print answers to readers questions. We’ve evidently been doing such a good job of keeping you informed, that questions have been few and far between lately. Or, they have been so specific or personal in nature, that they were out of the realm of printing.

For example, a reader recently wrote wanting to know of the possibility of renting a furnished high-rise apartment here for a couple of months, early next year. We were able to do some digging for them, and I tapped a couple of sources that might have a good read on the situation. In the end, we were able to find listings that might suit her needs. However, this was not a “one size fits all” question and answer! We always love helping you, so don’t hesitate to ask. It is part of your subscription.

Hope you are enjoying this issue!

Casino Poker:
For Players Who Want to WIN!

Our Gaming Editor – and Author – “Vegas Vic” – Victor H Royer – has written a new book: “Casino Poker.”

With the World Series of Poker just recently completed here in Las Vegas, maybe next year is your turn! And with this book, you will certainly have a better chance than most.

We asked Vic about this book, and here’s what he had to say:

“Cash is King – and with this book, you too can haul in the Cash, and laugh all the way to the Bank!

In Poker – and Texas Hold ’em especially – knowing how and when to play some of the best hands is a key requirement. Because – while they may be statistically the “best” hands – they don’t always win. And that’s because Poker is much more than just cards! It’s People!

A battle of wits, of knowledge, of experience, skills, observation, and just plain old Chutzpa!

But there’s a lot more to this game than just this. Especially for Texas Hold ’em.

While the game looks simple – and is relatively easy to learn – it’s apparent simplicity belies a true complexity of decisions and outcomes. And just knowing the Odds is not enough.

Math alone will not help you to Win. It’s a useful tool, of course, but Odds, Implied Odds, Pot Odds, and so on, are just a part of the overall arsenal that a good and successful poker player must have.

In the end – Poker is a game of people – and that means that a “hunch”, or an “observation”, or a “tell” are just as important – if not more so – than knowing the math behind the game and all it’s Odds.

In this book, you’ll find the tools and skills you need to make you a Winner! And that’s great for any game! And for your bankroll!” The printed version of this book can be found at this link:

Newkirk’s Notes

Hello From Las Vegas! – We’re under a cold snap (upper 70’s for a couple of days), but by the time you read this, we’ll be back to our usual September weather of 90’s as far as the eye can see. OK, at least for the next couple of weeks!

TSA – I rarely do a one-topic column. However, with the TSA upgrades and improvements at McCarran (Las Vegas) airport, and new services to get you pre-cleared to fly, airport security is a timely topic.

I have a friend using Clear Me, and he absolutely loves it. You are pre-checked to make sure you are an upstanding citizen. Then, at many airports, you are allowed to use a special lane. You are identified by a thumbprint or retinal scan and are through primary screening in a matter of minutes.

At $179 per year, it isn’t cheap. Probably not worth it if you are an irregular flyer. However, if you take to the skies often, or simply value that extra time as worth the money, my friend is raving about this service.

The following tips come directly from a McCarran TSA representative:

– Make sure each passenger is carrying their own ID and boarding pass when you get to TSA (unless they are kids and will be losing it). It will both get your party through more quickly, and keep you from delaying those behind you.

– Be prompt with grabbing your bags off the screening line. If bags pile up, that slows everyone down. They have to stop processing others. Plus, this is a tip for your own protection. Your bag is less likely to be grabbed by someone else (whether maliciously, or just as a mistake) if you get it back in your own possession ASAP.

– Pack an empty zip-lock back easily accessible in your carry-on. While you are standing there in line bored silly, empty your pockets into the bag so you are ready to drop it in the bin. This will make your life easier when you get to the front of the line, and also when you get your bin back. You just grab and go!

– “Get Out The Way” (as my friends from The South would say). Put yourself together and repocket everything away from the end of the line. This helps everyone along.

– Double-check that you are in the right line. If you aren’t, it is all the way back to the back of the line you are supposed to be in. An inconvenience at best, and a missed flight at the worst. Fortunately, McCarran’s TSA lines are pretty clearly marked.

– If you have any issues, ask for a supervisor right away. The rank-and-file agents working the lines can’t help you with anything, and it will simply frustrate the situation. Keep in mind that you’ll be asked to step aside while one is called.

Hope you are enjoying this issue!

Newkirk’s Notes

Hello From Las Vegas! – Summer is going out with a bang here across the west. 107F in San Francisco? Wow! It has been a hot one. It looks like we will be seeing our last 100F day of the year this Wednesday as September settles into the 90’s. While I much prefer heat to cold (I’ll take 100F over 32F any day of the week), even those of us dedicated desert dwellers are ready for a reprieve. We put up with the 3 months of summer in exchange for what the other 9 months offer.

In the next 2-3 weeks, I should be releasing my month-by-month run-down of why (or why not) a certain month is a good time to visit. I’ll give you an advance tip. October is absolutely the best month to visit if you are just coming to enjoy Las Vegas (as opposed coming for March Madness or another event which you are making a specific trip for).

Average high is 86F, low is 55F. Never too hot, never too cold. Unlike our very windy spring weather, things are calm. The earlier sunset lights up The Strip sooner. It is a great time to finally take that tour of Hoover Dam or Red Rock Canyon. For you sports betting fans, baseball is having playoffs, football is in full swing, and the NBA and NHL are cranking up.

Fontainbleau Is Finally Sold – The hulking blue monster on the North Strip, sitting half-finished for a decade, finally got sold to real estate developer who plans to do something with it. The sale price was $600 million, and it will take a reported $1 billion to finish it. This is a fraction of what it would cost to build from the ground-up today.

Here’s a commercial touting what was in store for the never-finished property:

They aren’t tipping their hat as to what is in store. Given the location next door to the $1.4 billion convention center expansion which would come online just about the same time the hotel is finished, don’t expect a gambling emporium with low limits and a cheap buffet. I’m guessing they will cater heavily to the business traveler with upscale lounges, fine dining, an amazing spa and shopping to keep an accompanying female spouse occupied if the slots aren’t her thing, and perhaps a perfunctory nightclub. (We’re not trying to be sexist here. If a man joins his wife on a visit for her industry, he probably has no problem keeping his days busy at the craps table).

The developer has longstanding relationships with major hotel chains, so you can bet that a major, recognizable brand will be planted on the property. No word as to whether they will keep the Fontainbleau name. I’m guessing not, with the latest Las Vegas trend of coming up with really stupid, meaningless names for things. (We’re looking at you SLS, Cromwell, etc).

More Cell Phone Coverage On The Strip – We’re living in the streaming video age. With Facebook Live, the Periscope app, and others, the selfie is giving way to the live video for those who want to show where they are, and what they are up to. In anticipation of the continued demand for cell coverage on The Strip, Clark County is dealing with applications for all the major carriers who want to be able to put low-powered nodes along county-owned structures (think streetlights, stoplights, and similar).

Better Bus Safety – Those of you who save a few bucks by riding one of the two bus routes along The Strip and to Fremont Street will be happy to hear that the Regional Transportation Commission is working to take the closed-circuit cameras which let the driver keep his eye on passengers, and enable them to stream to law enforcement.

This is due in part to the standoff which happened between local police and a deranged gunman on a bus closed the Las Vegas Strip in front of the Bellagio, which resulted in the death of one rider before the gunman finally surrendered. Should an incident like this happen in the future, the police will have the ability to see exactly what is going on in the bus, and respond accordingly.

World Cup Las Vegas 2026 – Much ado was made over the $750 million that “Las Vegas” was spending to build The (NFL) Raiders a new stadium. What was repeatedly overlooked is that a large stadium was something needed even without the interest of the NFL, simply because Las Vegas wasn’t able to host events of that nature and size. The best we could do was Sam Boyd Stadium, with less than a 40,000 person capacity for sports events, and 10 miles east of The Strip.

30-40 non-football events are projected for the stadium each year. Do the bigger conventions want to get all of their attendees under one roof and bring in the Rolling Stones or Bruno Mars for a concert? Check. Big college football season kick-off game (like they hold in Dallas and Atlanta each year)? Check. NCAA Final Four or other big tournament? Now a possibility.

Not to mention that touring bands and acts which generally only play stadiums will now make Las Vegas a stop. Or all kinds of other gatherings and events. In the not so distant future, one (or more) of your Las Vegas visits each year could very well be geared around seeing your NFL or NHL team play our team here. Or, for a big event we host that is up your alley.

We’re already swinging for the fences. We’re putting in a bid to host the World Cup (of soccer, aka international football) in 2026. Possibly considered the biggest sporting tournament in the world (except for perhaps the Olympics). We have the infrastructure, abilities, and (soon facility) to host an event like this without breaking a sweat.

You Are Looking Live … – College football season is upon us again, and sports fans who are paying attention might notice that there is a notable absence of Brent Musburger, who called some of the biggest college games over too many years to count. Starting each game with his trademark “You are looking live..”.. Not to mention his decades of calling NBA basketball, college basketball, and hosting the NFL Today show on CBS for years. (Not to mention his famous feud with Jimmy “The Greek” Snyder).

What does this have to do with Las Vegas? Musburger, at age 78, ended his broadcasting career to relocate here to the desert and start a new venture in the past few months. His Vegas Stats and Information Network broadcasts live from a stuido on the floor of the South Point both on SiriusXM Channel 204 and also with a video stream on the website. Musburger always made veiled references to the point spreads during his broadcasts. As an avid sports better who loves having the action, the network is sports talk geared toward the sports bettor.

Musberger is currently heard from 3-6 PM on weekdays, with additional shows from 8-10 AM on the weekends. We haven’t been down to watch the show live, but we’ve heard that Musberger is very approachable, friendly, and willing to chat when not on the air. And so far, really enjoying living where the action is.

BTW, how much did Musberger love Las Vegas previously? He always used his seniority to call the Las Vegas bowl, despite the bowl’s middle-tier status. Nothing like a paid vacation!

Hope you are enjoying this issue!
